What did the Ming dynasty secret police, the Brocade-clad guards, (錦衣衛) do and how were they organized? Were they also assassins? 明朝的秘密警察，錦衣衛做了什麼？他們是怎麼組織起來的？他們也是刺客嗎？ ... The SS is unique in nature to the 20th century, they are based on Social Darwinian ideology above all else. The Jin』yi』wei will protect imperial interests regardless of the ideology of the current emperor. The same is true for organizations like the NKVD, whose loyalty was to the Party and communist ideology, not to one particular man or office. They』re also nothing like the Janissary corps, as their main purpose isn』t on the battlefield. There’s really no organization that perfectly mirrors their function. The Praetorian Guard in theory is probably the closest. The Jinyiwei was only at 6th place by contrast, whether or not that was the right place to put them, I don』t know. I guess I would have to also study up on the other organizations as well in order to find out for sure! On the bright side, at least they 「only」 lasted for 7 years. The Guard by contrast lasted throughout virtually the entire reign of the Ming Empire, a fact which I』m sure annoyed most. The rest of the Ming was nowhere near as tyrannical, but was instead worse, in that all the Emperors were either unintelligent, weak, lazy or any combination of the above if not all three. In fact, the Ming itself is, in the later half of the dynasty especially, one of those periods of history that most Chinese people would rather prefer to ignore, and 「pretend」 that it never happened. It just wasn』t a really good time, which is why I find it strange that many people outside of China somehow think China at this time was still more 「advanced」 than other parts of the world… I don』t think that was the case anymore, not since the Tang, Song and Yuan Dynasties. Under Yuan China, life was considered to be so bad, so destructive and so painful, that even when they were finally overthrown and expelled back to Mongolia, there would always exist in China long thereafter, this widespread paranoia amongst all levels of Chinese society, a belief which insisted that the Mongols were planning an imminent re-invasion of the Middle Kingdom. All who were alive now, remembered how viciously traumatic life had previously been under the Mongols, no one really wanted a return to the old ways, and so thus, it was believed that the New Regime had to strengthen itself by any means necessary, even if it meant via totalitarian rule. I will say though, that the Jinyiwei didn』t have an Waffen SS equivalent however, instead they were a very 「behind the scenes」 type of organization, which rarely had participation on the battlefields, leaving that up to the Imperial Army itself instead.
